Restoring Dignity and Independence:

The Story of Mr. Paresh Das

At 70 years old, Mr. Paresh Das from Malibagan, Sonapur, Kamrup Metro, Assam, had spent a lifetime relying on the rivers for his livelihood as a dedicated fisherman. However, as mature cataracts clouded his vision in both eyes, his world grew darker each day. The once-familiar waters became treacherous, and his inability to work led to a severe economic downturn. The simple joys of his profession slipped away, and with no financial means to afford cataract surgery, despair took hold. His family, already struggling to make ends meet, was unable to help, leaving him feeling neglected and helpless—a prisoner to his own blindness.

Hope arrived in the form of Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya’s (SSDN) dedicated community health workers, who, during an outreach visit, identified his condition and assured him that his sight—and dignity—could be restored. He was promptly brought to SSDN Main Hospital, where he underwent a successful cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. The moment his bandages were removed, the world reappeared in vivid clarity—the faces of his loved ones, the shimmering waters, and the life he had almost given up on.

With restored vision, Mr. Das returned to his beloved profession, once again casting his nets with confidence. The surgery not only gave him back his eyesight but also revived his independence and self-worth. His story is a testament to SSDN’s unwavering commitment to eliminating preventable blindness and ensuring that financial hardship is never a barrier to sight.

At Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, we believe that vision is dignity, and through our community outreach programs, we continue to transform lives, one surgery at a time.
